Papatoetoe is one of the larger South Auckland suburbs with a long history of settlement and an ethnically diverse population made up primarily of Europeans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and Maori. 

Central Papatoetoe is centred around Great South Road with a shopping mall at Hunters Corner, including underground parking, and the "Old Papatoetoe" shops at the western end of St George St. It is also close to the Westfield Shopping Centre at Manukau City.  Rail links also give easy access to the Sylvia Park shopping centre via the Glen Innes line.

Papatoetoe has a range of community facilities including the Papatoetoe Centennial Pools complex, Sports Centre, Allan Brewster Recreation Centre. It is also close to two well known golf clubs - The Grange and the Auckland Club.
